Maybe you can hardly believe that but only in the USA it is 500 million plastic straws to be thrown every day. This report was published by The National Geographic, and stimulated activists from Swiss Neuchâtel to start acting for banning that kind of plastic waste.

The initiative is known as Papaille, (Pas Paille) which can be translated from French as “ Whithout a straw”. Papaille is a project of En Vert Et Contre, an association currently represented in Nyon, Lausanne, Geneva, Vevey, Martigny, Sion, Fribourg, La-Chaux-de-Fonds, aimed to ban using of plastic straws in local bars and restaurants till 2019. Activists are quite active in social media and already got support of GastroNeuchâtel, a local gastro association.

The idea is to continue using only biodegradable or reusable stainless steel, bamboo or hard plastic straws. However most of the drinks arrive in plastic bottles, so maybe this would be an initial point of total refuse from using plastic in Neuchâtel.
