Let there be Rock. How to make Geneva sway

I was having a wonderful dinner on the terrace of one Luzern’s restaurants, when pipes and drums suddenly started to play. A waiter came to me smiling, saying proudly “Real Swiss music is here”. I asked myself “So they like it loud, but do they really rock?!” I started to do some research in social media, and came across some acts that really raise a racket in the calm city of Geneva.

Annunakis was created by enthusiastic Yannick Nyanguile 2 years ago. In 2016 Yannick (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Marco Anselmi (lead guitar), Antoine Gillieron (bass), and Axel Vincenti (drums) met at ‘Studio Rouge’ in Geneva and decided to play together. Before they had worked with several groups like D.o.M. / Cold Bath / The Vandersons.

Playing French rock, Yannick was inspired by British and American musicians like Foo Fighters, U2, Muse, Audioslave, Red Hot Chili Peppers, so he decided to sing in English. Like other rockers, the Annunakis guys feel the mood of the world and express their attitude.

“I think the world where we live needs a little more hope. Our music is a way to say that we are not alone. We talk a lot in our songs about the world and humanity”, says Yannick, and proudly notes that humanity and love are the basis of the Annunakis philosophy.

“Annunakis are Sumerian gods. The legend says that they came from space and created humanity. We take our inspiration in the things which we face in life. Love”, says Yannick.

These hot guys call the style of music they play “astral rock”. They have a studio and work on their album there. I was all ears to understand how they create music, and Yannick kindly explained everything step by step:

“Generally everything starts from a riff. We record it on a metronome and find the verse, the chorus. After that we add the drums, bass and second guitar. Then I record the vocal melody and the lyrics”.

They are expected to start playing live in front of the audience at Carouge’s Village du Soir in March, however Yannick had his own experience in front of 25,000 people at the M6 Music Live in Paris. Big concerts get his blood pumping.

“I saw U2 at the Olympic Stadium in Roma this summer. It was amazing, incredible sound, and an incredible light show. It made my heart beat”, Yannick shares his opinion.

Talking about the overall market, Yannick said that Geneva was full of talented musicians and there are also cool festivals and open stages. Closing my eyes, I remember the hot summer air of the Fêtes de Genève and a rock stage just in front of the Jet d’Eau, and my body starts to swing and sway…
