How a Woman Develops a Vegan Condom Brand in Geneva

More than five billion condoms are sold worldwide every year. Latex used for condom production is said to be one of the most environmentally friendly material. However, chemists propose alternative materials.

We had a talk with Gabrielle from Geneva, one of the first to offer vegan condoms to the market.

SUISSEPIC: What is the Green Condom Club?

Gabrielle Lods: I am the founder of the Green Condom Club, a condom brand from Geneva with vegan and transparent ingredients. They do not contain toxic chemicals. They are safe and reliable plus they do not smell.

SUISSEPIC: How did the idea of your business appear?

Gabrielle: It was the summer of 2015. I had a conversation with friends about all the toxic chemicals contained in tampons and pads and about their dramatic effect on womens’ bodies.

Then we started wondering about men. Is there a product that men are exposed to on a regular basis that may have a harmful effect on their bodies? The answer was, unfortunately, yes. Which product, you ask? Condoms. Condoms manufacturers usually don’t say anything about the ingredients they use. They may harm people with allergies and encouraging a lack of transparency. We were horrified, so decided to change that!

We began by distributing Glyde Ultra condoms through a subscription model, adding more sizes and the option to buy packs of 3 or 10 as the Green Condom Club grew in popularity. After several large B2B orders, we decided to find a manufacturer for our own brand.

In February 2017 we went to a potential factory. We officially started production of the Green Condom Club branded condoms after we carefully vetted the manufacturer. It was very important to choose a supplier who shared our commitment to transparency with ingredients, manufacturing conditions, professionalism and strict respect of the international norms.

SUISSEPIC: Tell about the unique characteristics of your product?

Gabrielle: Our product is vegan. We do not use casein in manufacturing. Casein is a milk byproduct that used for latex production, and which gives conventional condoms that sour latex smell. You can find all the ingredients at our website, we are the first condom brand in Europe to be fully transparent. All our products are certified with CE, ISO 4074, ISO 13485 and ISO 9001 norms.

SUISSEPIC: Who are your clients?

Gabrielle: The demand for condoms with transparent and non-toxic ingredients is increasing! Our customers are mostly from Western Europe, between 25 – 35. They care about health and environment.  Almost 50% of them are ladies.

SUISSEPIC: As a fempreneur, what would you say about success. What it means to you?

Gabrielle: Living my dream life: working on interesting projects with a great impact, having time for relationships, meditate daily, kitesurf regularly and have enough money to comfortably support a family.

SUISSEPIC: How do you develop and set goals?

Gabrielle: I have been using the bullet journal method for 3 years now! It’s the longest I’ve ever sticked (by far) to a time/project/todo list management tool. This Christmas, I’ve also used the Desire Map to align and I can say the results so far are astounding.

SUISSEPIC: What is your favorite Swiss place?

Gabrielle: My absolute favorite is the Vals Thermal Bath as I love the esthetics of the place and the calmness of the village. Closer to home, I am a big fan of Les Bains des Pâquis for cold water swimming and a good sauna (and fondue!).
