Churches and cathedrals in Geneva

Geneva was always an important religiuos center in Europe. Since it became an episcopal seat in the 4th century through the Reformation movement untill now. Its outstanding cathedrals and chamber churches keep a great history in their walls and behind their doors.

Saint Peter's Cathedral

The religious landmark of Geneva. Christian churches and baptisteries on the site have existed since the IV century. Its construction started in 1160 and lasted about 150 years. It represents various styles from Romanesque to Baroque to Classicism.

The throne of the notorious reformer Jean Calvin has been preserved in the cathedral, as well as parts of temples found during excavations of the cathedral, which existed by archaeologists as early as the 4th century.

The Notre Dame Basilica

This beautiful and richly decorated catholic church building makes a list of places to visit.

The Basilica of Notre Dame was built in the years 1852-1857 in the Gothic style of the XII century. It resembles the cathedral of Amiens. A complete reconstruction was carried out in 1981. One of the main shrines inside the temple is a white-stone sculpture of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was received as a gift from Pope Pius IX in 1859, later canonized.

The Russian church

The Russian Church is a historic Russian orthodox church in Geneva, Switzerland.

Grand Duchess Anna Fyodorovna, who resided in Bern and Geneva after she chose to separate from Grand Duke Constantine, gave funds to build the church in 1863; it was designed by David Grimm and completed in 1866 in the fashionable Les Tranchées neighborhood of Geneva.
